I am in Western Civ. Class, and the professor made a comment about forgiveness in a pagan society (we are discussing law). He wondered whether forgiveness were possible without Christ; he doubted it, because the desire for revenge, etc. can be very strong.

What this says to me is that "my religion is the only thing keeping me in line." Perhaps that is a harsh exaggeration, but it is essentially the statement that I heard.
